ILCC Spring 2016 Classes
The course offerings for Iowa Lakes for Spring 2016 are out!
Check them out at:
http://www.iowalakes.edu/registrars_office/course_schedules/
Some things to remember when considering taking a college class:
- High School students wishing to take college classes through ILCC must be juniors or seniors OR be a freshman or sophomore who is TAG identified in order for the high school to pay for the classes. Students must also meet ILCC eligibility guidelines, as well as the Senior Year Plus guidelines. Mrs. Brechwald can help determine if you qualify for classes
- If you plan to attend a college other than ILCC it is your responsibility to check with the colleges on transferrability of those courses. We can offer you suggested "general" electives that tend to be safe classes to take, but each college has their own guidelines on what they will accept for transfer credit and they are all different.
-The high school cannot monitor grades for ILCC classes. If you choose to take a college class, you are treated as a college student.
- You cannot miss a high school class for a college class (except on Wed. 2 hour early out schedule). You must make your college courses work with your high school classes.
- Online college classes aren't for everyone. Are you prepared for an online class and will you be successful?
- Once you take a college class, you have a college GPA!!!
- We offer many "in-house" classes for college credit. Western Civ I, Western Civ II, Intro to Computers, Human Relations, Computer Generated Blueprint & Design, Welding Tech.
-These cannot count towards required high school classes for graduation. You receive elective credit for them at ELC.
If you have questions, contact Mindy Brechwald!!!

PSAT/NMSQT Test
ELC will be testing on Wed. Oct. 28th from 8-12:00.
Please go to the following link for more information on the PSAT/NMSQT test.
About PSAT/NMSQT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. This test also has the capability of giving you feedback on your readiness to take AP (Advanced Placement) classes while in high school.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures:
- Critical reading skills
- Math problem-solving skills
- Writing skills
Sophomores are allowed to test, however only Juniors can be entered in the Nation Merit Scholarship portion.
See the link provided above for more details on the test: why test?, dates, times, cost and other information.
We recommend those ranked in the top 10% of their class take the test. There is a $15 cost to test. See Mrs. Brechwald to sign up!!!! Registration deadline is Thursday, September 24th.

Resources and Information
Students and Parents:
During this very difficult time in our community, I'm sure there are many who are experiencing wide varieties of emotions- from anger, fear, guilt, shock, denial, questions and other strong emotions. I have attached two articles on grief you may find helpful.
Students, I do not have set office hours in the summer, but I would like to let you know that I would be happy to set up a time to meet with you, either in individually or with a group of students if you would like to visit. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you in any way.
I would also like to provide you with some community resources that you could access if needed:
Local clergy/pastors
Seasons Center - Estherville
Hope Haven - has a Therapist based out of Estherville - call the Emmetsburg office.
Death and Grief
If someone close to you has died, you probably feel overwhelmed with grief. Read about some things that might help you cope.

$1000 Scholarship for Juniors
Juniors considering ILCC, don't pass up the opportunity to earn a $1000 scholarship. If you are considering ILCC and have a 2.5gpa take the time to fill this application out! It does not commit you to ILCC, only gives you the opportunity to get a jump on paying for college, IF you end up attending ILCC after high school. Make sure when you get to the application that you complete the Sanborn Junior Scholarship.

Seniors!
Hopefully you are busy working on your scholarships applications! Thank you to those who attended the meeting on Thursday last week. We went over important information regarding our local scholarships and other information regarding the college planning process.
The FAFSA is a CRUCIAL component of this process. All students going to college next fall should file the FAFSA!! See my "FAFSA" page of this blog for more info and links to get your pin and to the application. Only 8 ELC students have completed it so far!!
For the local scholarships, the format has changed. These are in google docs. You must go to "file" and then "make a copy" in order to edit the applications. If you wish to do them in Microsoft Word, you can download them in a word document and save them that way also. Please see me if you have any questions.
Go HERE for the slideshow we went through at the meeting
